Plastering

Smooth. Sharp. Done Right.

With over 35 years in the trade, plastering is where it all began for Ian — and it remains at the core of Adfer Cymru’s reputation for precision and professionalism.

Whether you’re refreshing a single room or replastering an entire property, high-quality plasterwork makes all the difference. We don’t just skim over cracks and call it done. We prepare surfaces properly, ensure corners are sharp and consistent, and deliver a flawless finish that stands up to close inspection — and lasts.

Perfect Finish, Every Time

We take pride in the small things — tight corners, clean lines, smooth surfaces. It’s the kind of attention to detail that sets a room apart. Our plastering provides the perfect base for decorating, whether you’re going for a crisp modern look or restoring original features in an older home.

Old Houses Need a Different Approach

We understand how to work with traditional materials in older Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian homes. In properties with solid stone walls, we offer breathable lime plaster systems that allow moisture to evaporate naturally — preventing damp and preserving the integrity of the building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to remove the old plaster before skimming?

Not always. If the existing plaster is sound and properly bonded, we can often apply a skim coat over the top. However, if there’s damage, damp, or blown sections, it’s better to remove it and start fresh — we’ll advise what’s best for your walls.

Yes, but the surface needs the right preparation. We’ll clean, score, and prime painted walls with a bonding agent to ensure the plaster sticks and doesn’t fail later. It’s one of the details many skip — but we don’t.

Typically, a skim coat dries in 3–5 days depending on the temperature and humidity. Full re-plastering (especially on bare brick) can take longer. We’ll advise you on drying times and when it’s safe to paint.

Yes. We can straighten out walls using bonding plaster or board before finishing with a skim. If your room’s full of dips, bumps or bad corners, we’ll put it right and leave everything flat and sharp.

Yes — and choosing the wrong one can cause issues. Older stone houses need breathable lime-based plasters, while modern homes are better suited to gypsum. We’ll always match the right material to the building.

Lime work is considerably more labour intensive and costly than gypsum plastering due to the increased material costs and the time taken to build up the layers. The result is worth it, but it is a labour of love.

We do. Lime plaster (sometimes called traditional plaster) is ideal for older properties as it allows moisture to escape and prevents trapped damp. It also helps maintain the building’s character and is essential for heritage work.

Absolutely — and we treat them with the same care and detail as walls. Whether it’s a flat skim, overboarding, or patch repairs after leaks, we’ll make sure it’s smooth, solid, and ready to paint.

We take cleanliness seriously. Floors, doorways and furniture are carefully protected, and we tidy up thoroughly before we leave. Plastering doesn’t have to mean living in dust for days.

It’s always best to remove sentimental and valuable items from the rooms being plastered for peace of mind.

Taping & jointing is a method used with plasterboard where joints are taped and filled instead of a full skim. It’s quicker and cheaper for new builds, but doesn’t always give the same high-end finish. We can advise on what suits your project best.

In many cases, yes. We’re happy to assess problem areas and recommend a targeted repair if a full re-plaster isn’t needed. You’ll always get honest advice — no upselling.
